Year 5 is when many families move from general skill building to more targeted 11+ preparation. The right plan depends on the schools and test formats you are considering, so begin by checking their current admissions information.
Term-by-term approach
Autumn
Identify the target schools and understand the subjects, format and registration process. Strengthen vocabulary, reading, Maths and reasoning foundations.
Spring
Introduce more exam-style practice. Work on timing gradually and keep an error log so revision is based on real weaknesses.
Summer
Use mixed timed sets and occasional mock exams. Practise the exact question styles that match the target test, while protecting time for normal school learning and rest.
What makes practice effective?
Do not simply complete paper after paper. Review why an answer was wrong, identify the skill involved, practise that skill again and then retest it. This turns mistakes into useful learning.
