Musical Lab: make music, rhythms and sound
Play, listen and experiment with music in your browser. Homework Magic Musical Lab has twelve small, hands-on activities for children.
Create songs and melodies
Try Song Maker and Melody Maker to put notes into patterns, Rhythm to arrange beats, Chords and Arpeggios to explore musical patterns, or play the piano keys in Shared Piano. Shared Piano currently supports playing together on one device or in tabs of the same browser; it is not a live cross-device room.
See and explore sound
Spectrogram shows sound frequencies, Oscillators lets children listen to different wave shapes, Sound Waves shows animated waveforms, and Strings lets children pluck virtual strings.
Make art and explore voices
Kandinsky turns drawings into sounds. Voice Spinner lets a child record a short sound and play it forwards or backwards. Microphone access is requested only after Record is pressed; the voice clip stays on that device and is not sent to Homework Magic servers.
For families
The activities use a self-hosted browser audio engine and do not need a paid AI service. Sound Waves and Strings also offer locally hosted copies of the original open-source experiments. Other activities are Homework Magic adaptations; this is not the official Google Chrome Music Lab website. The native iPhone and Android menus do not currently include these browser-only experiments.
Frequently asked questions
Is Musical Lab free to try?
The browser-based music activities do not require an AI subscription. Account access and any feature availability depend on the Homework Magic website release.
Can children use Song Maker and Shared Piano?
Yes. Song Maker offers a small music pattern editor. Shared Piano currently supports one device or tabs in the same browser, not a multiplayer room across the internet.
Does Voice Spinner upload recordings?
No. Voice Spinner asks for microphone permission only after a child presses Record. Its short voice clip stays in the browser on that device.
Are these official Chrome Music Lab experiments?
No. Homework Magic includes optional original open-source Sound Waves and Strings experiments, alongside its own adapted learning activities. It is not affiliated with Google.
